Since Saturday Ed and I have been bottle feeding this calf. Her mama died not long after giving birth as she had already been down and sick for three days prior. Ed had given the cow shots and had kept her warm and fed, but she was in a very weakened state. We were surprised to drive out and see this calf healthy and wandering around the pasture bawling. Unfortunately, delivering the calf used the last bit of strength the cow had.

We brought her baby to our friend’s barn around the corner from our home so we could more easily care for her and she would be in a warm, dry place. Their mini-donkeys were terrified of her for a short time cause they had never seen a calf. You can briefly see one in the right hand side of the video. The actual footage shows both the donkeys she is sharing a pen with, but the movie file is too large to share online. I pared the video down to me calling her and her running out of the barn looking for me. I was sitting in my truck at the road and she was totally confused. She knew she heard my voice, but she didn’t know where I was. Animals are intelligent for it hasn’t taken her long to recognize the sounds that mean food!

This is the first time I’ve tried to edit a video and I still have a large file. When I tried to make it easier to download for those still on dialup, the quality of it was pit-i-ful! So, this is the best I can do until I learn more.
