For the third consecutive year, this Red Phase Screech Owl has returned to our back yard. The first year (2012) it stayed and raised a family. Last year, he briefly visited only to disappear and leave us wondering if he was alive and well. I’ve been watching daily out our kitchen window and this morning was THE DAY! I saw him sitting in the hole to the nesting site from 2012, ran to get my camera only to return and see him perched on the limb looking back towards the hole. What in the world?
A squirrel had ran him out and was now firmly planted and had no intentions of giving Hooty his spot back. I don’t know how this is going to play out, but I do know Hooty disappeared again and the Bluejays were in the top of the tree creating a ruckus. I suspect he flew up there to another hole where I couldn’t see him, but the Jays made sure he left again.
All is quiet outside now and the squirrel is still in residence. I hate that cause I’m thinking now our little friend won’t come back again.
They are tiny owls for those of you who have never seen one. You can get an idea how small they are by comparing the owl and the squirrel in the same shot. It was another great day in my little world, hope it will get better and the squirrel moves on and our little friend returns again.
