It’s a Weighty Issue

October 6th, 2011

Last year at this time, I was seventeen pounds lighter. I have gained back eleven of those pounds and yesterday I decided I needed to put the brakes on the eating. Now bear in mind I know eleven pounds doesn’t sound like all that much, but truthfully, the seventeen pounds was not really the magic number I needed to lose to begin with, but it was a start. I’ll take the eleven off again, but I sure wouldn’t complain about adding more to that.

I downloaded a free app yesterday for my phone to track my calories and any calories burned through exercise. After talking to my cousin, I tried a second app that does the same thing and her choice is the clear winner for it finds more foods that are already calculated for you by using your barcode scanner app on your smartphone.  It will scan the barcodes of the foods you eat and will automatically compute the calories you’ve consumed.

You can also put “apple” in the search bar or specifically “Gala Apple” and you have the choice of a small, medium or large one with the calories, carbs, sugars, fats, whatever the food you’ve entered contains as well as the calories.  Not only can you use your smartphone, the information is synced with their website so you can easily see what’s happened when you log on, or make changes or add to your info there.  (Have I mentioned I love technology?)

The app is a diary of sorts and one that I hope will keep me accountable as to what I’m letting slide down my throat!  After seeing what I consumed yesterday, it was actually easy for me to stay within my 1200 calorie limit today.  I actually consumed more than my allotted 1200 calories, but I burned those off and came in under my limit by walking, doing a little light cleaning and other chores around here. Woohoo!  If I can ramp up the exercise and keep my chocolate binges under control, I’m bound to lose weight and do it the right way.

Ask me tomorrow if I’m still excited about this, I do love to eat and take great pleasure in it! The problem is I was always a skinny girl, but as a very mature woman, that metabolism I once had no longer agrees with my lifelong eating habits. Shame, that!

I’m typing and sharing to try to keep myself motivated.  Wish me luck!

The only way that smartphone would work for me is if it could slap that donut out of my hand. Seriously, good luck with that 11 pounds!!

I don’t know how long this will last, I mean the logging my daily calorie intake, but I do know it is giving me some incentive at the moment and I’m learning more about what I can eat to stay at that magic number for the day. And, here’s the very best part; I haven’t been hungry today! Go me!
