A Cat Tale

May 31st, 2011

As I was traveling home from taking a look at our naked barn (story to follow at some point), I saw a creature running a long way down the road in front of me. It finally darted into the overgrown ditch and I thought nothing more of it, although I had determined it was probably a wild kitty. I made note in my mind where I thought it had disappeared, but never dreamed I would see it again. I briefly looked as I slowed down at the spot and I was right, I couldn’t see it.

Further down the road, I decided to stop and take a few wildflower photos. After getting out of my truck and then deciding I was done after a few shots, I looked back down the road and could see something.

Cat Tale

Was it that cat?

As I walked closer and started taking more photos, I could clearly see it was a gray and white cat and it was lying in the road as if it didn’t have a care in the world.

I just knew this wasn’t a country cat that had never been touched by the way he was calmly letting me approach, so I started calling.

Cat Tale

To my astonishment, it started my way….

…. and started talking to me.

Cat Tale

Closer….

Cat Tale

…. and closer….

Cat Tale

with more talking to me…

…as I was talking, calling and cooing to it.

I had a very clear idea this was a male after seeing his ragged ear and the size of those feet. He would definitely be a big boy with some weight on and those, um… boy parts altered.

Cat Tale

I also knew he had been loved on at one time cause it took him no time at all to make himself comfortable in my presence again.

See how he could care less about me and just how aloof he was determined to prove he was?  It was at this point I picked his back leg up to make sure I was right.  Yep, he’s all boy!

After one last greeting to let me know he thought I was okay, it was then I made the decision he would be too.

Cat Tale

I rushed back to my truck to get dog treats and cheese crackers, crushed them in a spot just off the road, bid him a brief farewell and took off home to get Ed’s thoughts on his situation.  After retrieving the pet carrier, I quickly made my way back to find him lying once again in the road.  I called, he came and without a fuss went right into the carrier.

I am happy to report he is safe, full and purring in a rabbit hutch tonight with his future home to be determined.  I do not want another house cat although he is welcome to hang here outdoors.  I’m simply not sure he will do that with our many dogs.  Maybe someone will give him a home; I have my fingers crossed on that one!

I do know this, it was his lucky day when the nut in the truck stopped to take photos never dreaming it would be of a photogenic, albeit ragged cat!

Future home to be “determined”? I think you’re only fooling yourself. Thanks for having such a big, mushy, loving heart. That Big Boy doesn’t know how lucky he just got.
