Goodbye, Sweet Kitty

1994 - 2011

Our handsome old cat, Simon, died today.  It was not surprising since he was an old man and had been going downhill for the last few months. He turned 16 years of age last July. A long life for a cat, that is for sure! We will miss him, but we are thankful he blessed our lives for all those many years. Ed buried him in our pet cemetery in our backyard. I created this collage when he was still young and spunky and I’m very happy I have it.

For years Mr. Independent would leave home even though he had been neutered as a young cat. We often wondered where he was and would look for him and call his name over and over with no luck in finding him. Just when we would give up on him returning home, there he would be! I firmly believe the widow lady on the corner was feeding him and perhaps even letting him sleep in her home and the reason he wouldn’t come to our calls. After Miss Bea passed away, Simon decided his original home was the place he needed to be and he never strayed again. He has always been allowed to stay indoors here too, I guess the widow lady treated him a little more special.  Even though he didn’t think he was the top cat here for a long time, he certainly has been during the last years of his life.  It will definitely be different without him here.  Ed especially had grown used to babying him these last weeks and days.  He reported the old boy even ate this morning.  I could see him going downhill all day though and he finally let go late this afternoon.  It’s been a sad day.

Donna, my heart is breaking. I’m so sorry for your loss. I wished you would have called me but I understand that sometimes it’s too painful to talk about right away. I’m here for you.
